Getting us re-connected and my Amazon interview experience
I made a decision to leave Microsoft after connecting with an Amazon recruiting friend who has been there for about 2.5 years. Funny thing is, I interviewed him for a position while I was at atlas, a division of aQuantive and ended up hiring someone more senior. He still talks to me - thanks Jay!
So I had a phone conversation with a recruiting manager I know from the industry and then a recruiting director there whom I know from the .com days. Both good guys who have had solid careers at Amazon and enjoy it.
From there we go to the formal interview (aka "the loop"). I met with several people (yes several) and the interview went well. Everyone had good questions for me and were, IMO, very open about experience and thoughts on Amazon...both good and bad. It was great to hear what's great about the place as well as where "we" can improve.
I met with people from a couple different businesses because of the growth they are experiencing and they not only wanted to gauge where I might fit best, but also give me an opportunity to look at other groups.
My recruiter followed up with me, shared feedback and made me an offer. And here I sit today, an Amazonian in my first week! I will keep this entry short but wanted to give a quick update on my experience and what's new.
If you have interviewed with Amazon, whether you ended up joining or not, drop me a mail and let me know what you think...good and bad. There are always room to grow in both areas.
You will see more about my Amazon.com recruiting adventure and hear about our hiring efforts. Feel free to connect with me with any questions and interest.

Biking riding, the new business sport
That being said, I still make time for riding (pedal power)! Those of you that don't know me, I'm big time commuter, bike racer and triathlete. The bike is my zen place. Makes me want to leave work early on sunny day, makes me smile when I fly by car traffic that is standing still on my way to work, and I like showing off my calves (no really).
But this week, a friend and Job Mob co-founder (http://www.thejobmob.com/recruiting/index.html#1) Josiah Johson drop me an email to let me know a buddy hooked him up with his old Cervelo (new or used those bikes are awesome) and he asked if I wanted to ride after work.
The weather here in Seattle started off slow, but based on the 5 day forecast, was going to start looking good Thursday through Sunday. So we decided to sync up on Thursday. Turned out today was good day. I met Josiah at the Job Mob HQ on Eastlake, checked out the space and we started talking shop as we were heading out the door.
This was just a friendly, let's get out in the sun shoot the breeze type of ride. We talked about how things have been going for the Job Mob and how the yare starting to see things turn in the economy and about successes and speedbumps thus far. Overall, business is good.
Then we start talking about recruiting and Josiah is like, Biking is the golf, and I'm like what?! Now I consider myself a very strong networker and well connected, but it kind of caught me off guard to hear someone say, not verbatim, but that biking was the new business sport.
I have always said that I need to learn how to golf so I can leverage that as a tool since it seems to be "the business man's sport." But Josiah proceeded to tell me about some of the technology folks he has met riding and the networking he has been doing while on the bike.
Now I have met my fair share of people via biking, have done a bit of networking and even hired from it. But I still hadn't thought of it as the new business man's sport. Now I really do.
And I'm glad that I won't have to pick up the clubs anytime soon, biking is pricey enough.
Good biking with you today Josiah. Best of luck to you and the crew at The Job Mob and I'll look forward to riding again soon.
For those of you that don't know, The Job Mob is a boutique recruiting firm working with technology professionals. Whether you are looking for a new adventure or not, this crew is good to have in your network. Never hurts to part of "the family."

Ba da bing http://www.bing.com/
1) The graphic on bing changes daily. Use your mouse to hover over pics and read about the photograph. The shots are really great.
2) Once you search on something, you'll see a bar on your left which offers suggestions for related searches, or a search within a search. (type in any car name andsee the recommended next links which have been determined based on volume of "next clicks")
3) Often when we search we see a "best match" selection which has been determined based on some algorythm (or is it logorhythm?). I have found it is pretty accurate.
4) Type in Amazon.com and check out the fact that bing gives you the customer service # (well buried on the actual site) in the results.
5) Type in UPS or FedEx and see that you can track a package or call customer service.
6) Same for Nordies (Nordstrom) and then check out the related searches on the left.
7) Travel info is great. Type in flights from Seattle to Chicago and not the buy/do not buy now feature.
8) Type in "restaraunts" and notice that it returns local choices for you. For comparison, try it as well in Google, not quite the same.
9) Cool feature, the search history which shows up on the left. Once you have search results, hover over the short descriptions and notice that you get a "bubble" which gives you a bit more detail. This is designed so that you can identify which link isn't going to meet your needs, and which will. Should save you a lot of time.
10) Last feature, for now and that I now...I'm sure there are more. Note that on the left bar you can see your search history. If you want, you can save your search history which would be especially helpful if you are researching something and don't have the time to complete your search.
So give bing a try today!

Technology just plain ROCKS
Hey there people. Technology is so cool. If you are not familiar with TED or have not checked out the Sixth Sense demo., check it out.
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/pattie_maes_demos_the_sixth_sense.html
Meet Microsoft Staffing Consultant Steve Sim
Our focus of this conversation was to talk about the Search group so I could get a little better idea about what is really going on there and what he is recruiting for.
The Search Team is doing some pretty cool stuff and it seems like they are continuing to make big strides in making Search effective. While we were chatting about this, Steve demonstrated a side by side comparison with one of our competitors and the results were pretty amazing (Check out www.live.com). Oh, and try comparing video or image search results for a very different experience. And not just the results it yielded, but the layout as well.
While still in beta, I have access to Kumo (I'm a blue-badger too) and I ran some of my own searches for candidates, blogs, images, etc all in an effort to find those involved with the Mobile Advertising Space (my plug that this is going to be an area of growth for us:-)). Kumo came back with some different, and equally strong results as the competition.
Now I'm not sure when official launch is of our new version of Search, but when you do get access, give it a whirl. I think you will see some great enhancements and improvements to what you are seeing and using now.
On a recruiting front, for those of you looking for incredible technology challenges and love the web services space, check out what the Search Team has to offer. You can find Steve on LinkedIn at http://www.linkedin.com/in/stevesimrecruiting.
Feel free to follow me on Twitter for job highlights, future interviews and much more.
Enjoy your day

Job Seeker Networking Event
Good Evening. So while this event took place Monday night, I share b/c there is another one coming April 13th. For those of you in the HR and Recruiting profession, if you are not part of WARecruit (can be found via Yahoo Groups), you should join. It's a great local Seattle/Puget Sound org to be a part of for networking.
I had a chance to follow up with my new associate and friend Lesa, who is big part of why this event took place and is happening again. It was a success and lots of new connections were made. I will keep this post short this time, but definitely wanted to get it out there in front of everyone.
I will be getting the flier for the next one soon and will get it on here as a reminder. But for now, make note of the date, April 13th.
I will be making time in my schedule so I can attend. Hope I see you there. BR
